Meetings and the Scouting Year

Pack Meetings

Pack Meetings are usually held once a month at the Jonesville United Methodist Church in Jonesville, NY.  They are usually held on the first Friday of the month.  All of the Scouts in all of the Dens attend the Pack meeting together.

Den Meetings

Den Meetings are usually held twice a month, in addition to the monthly Pack meeting. Each individual Den sets its own meeting schedule.

The Scouting Year

Our Cub Scout calendar generally follows the school year. The Pack’s annual kick-off meeting is in September. Regular Den and Pack meetings continue through March, when we have a Blue & Gold celebration to honor Scouting’s birthday and our Pack’s accomplishments.

By the Blue & Gold event, many Scouts have completed all their requirements to advance to the next Cub Scout rank, but Scouts have until the end of the school year to complete their requirements for advancement. Once school ends, Scouts officially move up to their next Cub Scout rank (and can begin working on their new requirements on their own).

Our Pack continues to hold activities at least once a month during the summer. In the past, these have included picnics, hikes, camping trips, trips to historic sites, trips to sporting events, and marching in the Fourth of July parade in Clifton Park. Many of our Cub Scouts also attend the day or overnight programs at Camp Boyhaven Scout Camp.

While we encourage families to stay active with Scouting through the summer, we understand vacations and other summertime commitments may not allow everyone to do so. Summer activities are all optional and are not required for normal advancement (though some activities can be used by Scouts to earn certain badges or electives).

ADULT LEADERS AND GETTING INVOLVED

Getting Involved

While there is a professional Boy Scouts of America organization supporting Cub Scouting, at the Pack level everything is done by parent volunteers. Adult positions in the most Packs – from Cubmaster to Committee Member – are filled by a parent with children in that Pack. Without parent volunteers, Cub Scout Packs could not function and would not exist!

As Cub Scouts advance on to Boy Scouts after the 5th grade, their parent volunteers typically “graduate” out of the Pack as well. So there is regular change in the adult leadership of the Pack and a regular need to look for new parents to step up and help. We see that as a healthy process that constantly brings fresh ideas and outlooks to the Pack.

There are two main areas parents can volunteer in:

1. Pack Committee — this meets once a month for 1-2 hours to plan the Pack’s schedule, prepare for Pack events, and discuss any issues related to the Pack. We encourage at least one parent from each den be apart of the Pack Committee. At least two Pack Committee members must apply for adult membership in the Boy Scouts of America and attend appropriate training. Committee members can volunteer to fill specific job responsibilities, including Committee Chair, Treasurer, Refreshments Chair, Pinewood Derby Chair, Awards Chair, Popcorn Kernal, Blue & Gold Award Dinner Chair, and Recruitment Chair.

2. Direct Scout Leadership — These are adult volunteer positions that are directly responsible for leading boys in Scouting activities usually on a weekly basis, including the Cubmaster, Assistant Cubmaster and Den Leaders. Anyone interested in volunteering for one of these positions must apply for adult membership in the Boy Scouts of America,be approved by the Pack’s charter organization, and attend appropriate training. Here some general information about the duties of a typical Den leader.

Boy Scouts of America, which oversees the Cub Scouting program, and Pack 42 are dedicated to providing a safe environment for all Cub Scouts. Adult applications are reviewed thoroughly and applicants must agree to a background check. There is also mandatory training for most Cub Scout volunteer positions (as well as ton of useful optional training). The goal of all of this is to insure the Pack delivers a Cub Scouting experience that is fun, educational and, above all, safe.

Cub Scouts and Pack 42 wouldn’t exist without parent volunteers. By just investing a handful of hours a year, you can have a huge positive impact on these boys.

If you have questions, need more information, or would like an adult volunteer application — please contact Cubmaster Greg Szczesny (NYPack42@gmail.com). Contact information is on the “Contact Us” page of this website.

We welcome your help!

PACK 42 CHARTER ORGANIZATION

What is a Charter Organization?

Each Cub Scout Pack has a sponsoring Charter Organization. The Charter Organization helps the Cub Scout pack by providing a meeting place and by insuring the Pack has necessary adult leadership. Cub Scout Packs and their Charter Organizations re-charter with the Boy Scouts of America every year.

Today, more than 100,000 Charter Organizations are helping Scouts worldwide.

Pack 42's Charter Organization

Since 1972, Cub Scout Pack 42's Charter Organization has been the Jonesville United Methodist Church. The Pack uses the church’s classrooms and activity hall for many of its meetings and events.

Pack 42 is tremendously grateful for the more than 45 years of support our wonderful Charter Organization has provided!

Jonesville United Methodist Church’s history with Scouting actually goes all the way back to 1916, when it chartered the sixth Boy Scout Troop in Saratoga County. Boy Scout Troop 6 continues to be active today.
